A Central Alberta man, a suspect in armed robberies in Olds and Red Deer, was denied bail along with a teenage girl by a Red Deer judge last week.

Travis Favel, 37, and Shae-Lyn Golden, 18, of no fixed address, are believed to be from Red Deer or the Central Alberta area and were arrested during a high-risk takedown in Spruce View on Dec. 23.

“Our emergency response team was contacted. The circumstances dictated that we had to intervene immediately,” said Innisfail RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuk. “(In a high-risk arrest) we use our vehicles and we use all of our available tools,” he added, noting the pair was in the process of fleeing the area when the arrests were made.

“They were loading up a vehicle and getting ready to part. That's why we had to intervene and arrest immediately.”

A bail hearing for Favel and Golden was held on Dec. 24 but was re-scheduled for Jan 4, at which time they were again remanded, with Favel scheduled for a Jan. 11 return in Red Deer, while Golden will come back to court, also in Red Deer, on Jan. 14. Both remain in custody.

Matechuk said Favel is facing 12 charges, including two for possession of a firearm while prohibited, possession of ammunition while prohibited, possession of prohibited weapon (brass knuckles), two charges of possession of stolen property, possession of cocaine, possession of heroin, unlawfully at large and two charges of failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance.

Golden faces eight charges, including two charges of possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition while prohibited, possession of prohibited weapon (brass knuckles), two charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) and possession of heroin.

In addition, a search of the vehicle the pair was in uncovered a loaded sawed-off shotgun and a sawed-off SKS assault rifle and ammunition for both. A quantity of drugs, believed to be cocaine and heroin, was also seized along with drug trafficking paraphernalia. Stolen property, including a laptop from a Ponoka school, was recovered as well as several types of weapons, including brass knuckles, a police baton, numerous knives and a machete.

Matechuk added Favel is a suspect in armed robberies in Olds and Red Deer.
