INNISFAIL – The Town of Innisfail is not changing its 2023 ATCO Gas franchise fee.

It will remain at 27 per cent and generate an estimated franchise fee revenue of $787,317 which is an increase of $60,939 for 2023. For 2022, the 27 per cent franchise fee generated revenue of $726,378, an increase of $98,785.

At town council’s Oct. 24 regular meeting, Erica Vickers, the town’s director of corporate services, noted council had previously requested the ATCO franchise fee discussion be brought forward after the fall municipal budget process to allow for any budgetary changes.

However, she explained to council the town’s 10-year agreement with ATCO was up for renewal this December.

Vickers’ report to council noted that on Sept. 12 administration brought forward the ATCO Gas Franchise Fee Agreement Bylaw before council for first reading, and that the town was now taking the next steps in the renewal process.

“We do have to have a renewal completed, and we do have to indicate our percentage inside this renewal,” said Vickers. “So, while this year we are bringing it earlier next year we'll go back and bring it after the budget process has been completed.”

Council unanimously approved a motion to keep the ATCO Gas franchise fee at 27 per cent for 2023.

“I usually balk at raising these things but I'm comfortable leaving it,” said Coun. Gavin Bates. “At the same I look forward to the day we ever lower one.”
