Children across Alberta and here in Innisfail are back in school on Sept. 3. Alberta RCMP are reminding motorists of back to school safety tips.

INNISFAIL – Alberta RCMP say they expect increased traffic on local roads as people return from holidays, school begins and school buses start their regular routes in September.

“With children returning to school, it’s important for drivers and pedestrians to be extra cautious and to respect the rules of the road,” said Supt. Rick Gardner of the Alberta Traffic Sheriffs. “Everyone must be mindful of bus and crosswalk safety and understand the expectations within school zones.”

Last year on Labour Day weekend, Alberta RCMP responded to 354 motor vehicle collisions which resulted in four fatalities and 44 injuries, said Supt. Gary Graham of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.

“Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. This long weekend, when you’re on the road always follow the posted speed limit and never operate a vehicle while under the influence of drugs, alcohol or while fatigued," said Graham.

Alberta RCMP is urging drivers to practice several back-to-school safety tips.

In a new release provincial Mounties stressed that all road users must be aware of their surroundings at all times, stay focused on the road and take appropriate actions to avoid a potential collision.

RCMP said students should cross at designated crosswalks and controlled intersections, make eye contact with drivers and ensure vehicles have come to a complete stop before crossing the road. As well students should stay on the sidewalk when walking to and from school and keep a safe distance from the street when waiting for a school bus or public transit.

Parents are asked to ensure their children know the safest route to and from school and if parents are picking their children up, park where it’s safe to do so.

Drivers are asked to pay attention to road signage, know the speed limit whether in a school or playground zone, keep an eye out for children especially during school operating hours and stop when a school bus is flashing its alternating red lights.

Alberta RCMP said they will continue to work with Alberta Sheriffs and other law enforcement and safety partners to ensure Albertans make the right driving decisions.
