The town of Bowden would be a different place without Carla Sparks.

Just ask the Bowden Minor Hockey Association, the Bowden Figure Skating Club, or teachers at the Bowden Grandview School.

“Carla is an amazing woman without whom the community of Bowden would be a less vibrant place,” said Shari Robertson, Alberta School Council Association director. “Earlier this year, she was nominated for an Alberta School Council Association (ASCA) Parent of Distinction Award, and in April, at the annual convention, it was announced that she was one of 10 winners in Alberta.”

The web page for ASCA defines a Parent of Distinction as an individual who demonstrates ability to promote parental involvement in the public education system, a parent who is truly exceptional in their dedication and initiative, and is a dynamic leader in their community.

“In all aspects, Carla is an engaging parent who is full of passion for her community and school, a parent who exudes genuine excitement when you meet her, and someone whom you want to be around,” added Robertson. “She is always there for fundraisers, there for teacher recognition days, and one thing for sure, if she is not behind an event, she will be there behind the scenes volunteering somehow.”

Sparks has been characterized as a go-to person in Bowden, and someone who has her finger on the pulse of the community. She has been active in Bowden for many years, and will continue to do so.

“I grew up volunteering with my family in the town (now village) of Veteran for so many years. My parents were active in church, and we helped with church suppers and events,” said Sparks. “My brothers were hockey players, so we all volunteered and did what was needed. I helped with sports days, tournaments, and with whomever needed an extra hand.”

She has three children, aged seven, 11, and 14, who also volunteer with school leadership, figure skating and hockey. The third-generation family of volunteers is well on their way.

“Living in a small community for most of my life, I know that nothing happens without volunteers. My parents taught me that you help when you can, how you can, as much as you can, and that is one lesson I want my kids to learn,” said Sparks. “It takes many people to do great things, and as I volunteer in one way or another, I want others to pick up what they can as well. We are all part of this great community we call Bowden. I take pride in my community, and want others to as well.”

Sparks added she was humbled by the Parent of Distinction Award.

“I was honoured to have been nominated even for the award. I love doing what I do. My community is important to me. When I found out that I had won, I was humbled and grateful that I had been recognized by ASCA,” added Sparks. “I don't volunteer to be recognized, but I like to see activities and opportunities available in Bowden for all the kids. This is about making Bowden a better place for everyone.”

Sparks officially received the Parent of Distinction Award at the Bowden Grandview School Christmas concert on Dec. 19.
