Bowden's very own Cole Berreth is still revelling in the 2012 Telus Cup win he and his teammates captured April 28 in Leduc.
Berreth, 17, plays defence for the Red Deer Optimist Rebels Midget hockey team. They just claimed the 39th national midget championship with a 6-5 double overtime win against Phénix du College Esther-Blondin (Quebec).
“It was really good, especially winning for Red Deer for the first time,” said Berreth. The team started out lagging behind 5-1 going into the third period.
“The coach said it's been done before and we bought into that,” said Berreth of their comeback. “Of course the power play helped.”
Scott Feser got the team's second goal 53 seconds into the third period on the power play, adding another at 10:54 before Nick Glackin scored the next two goals at 11:12 and 12:42, forcing overtime.
The first 10-minute extra period saw no goals. Glackin tipped a shot from Rebels captain Brady Bakke past Phénix goaltender Kevin Darveau, securing the win.
“It was pretty cool,” he said of the whole experience, and also having the game aired on TSN. “We watched ourselves afterwards and that was really neat to see,” he said.
This is Berreth's last year at the midget level and he said he plans to play Junior A in Alberta or Saskatchewan next year.
