Bowden Grandview School's Danielle Ringheim has received the Sharon Armstrong Early Years of Practice Award in recognition of her dedication to students with special learning needs.

Given by the Alberta Teachers' Association Special Education Council, the award recognizes a young Alberta teacher who demonstrates outstanding practice and innovation in their support of students. Currently in her fourth year of teaching high school English, social studies and career and life management classes, Ringheim is also the student services coordinator on the school's Learning Support Team.

“My older brother had unique learning needs, but unfortunately when we were in school there wasn't an emphasis on inclusion and I think the consequences of that are long-term,” said Ringheim. “It is so satisfying to see how much we have discovered about inclusive education, assistive technologies, and community supports that help all students succeed. Chinook's Edge is leading the way with a full team approach to each child as a whole person, with every school in our division having a Learning Support Team that is highly engaged with what each student needs to be successful in school.”

The approach was introduced into each Chinook's Edge school several years ago, blending the priorities and specialties from both the student services and learning services departments. The teams meet regularly, along with any community resources that may be required, and work together to ensure students receive continuous support that will lead to success in school and in life.

Wanda Christensen, Chinook's Edge School Division assistant superintendent of student services, has been Ringheim's supervisor for four years.

“We are very proud of Danielle and she took on the role of learning support coordinator in Bowden as a new teacher,” said Christensen. “She embraced it with passion and enthusiasm and has been relentless in her support for students, teachers and parents.”

The young teacher noted her role can be hard work but the results are gratifying.

“We are a K to 12 school and because of that I work with students of all ages. I support families whose preschool children are in our community playschool, right through to graduates who are preparing to transition into post-secondary,” said Ringheim. “My hope for all students is that they achieve their individual goals and reach success as lifelong learners. I'm so honoured to receive this award, but I am more honoured to be working with these students.”
