INNISFAIL - The new vice-principal at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School brings with him a lifelong passion for Catholic education.

“Going to Catholic school was some of the best years of my life,” said David Griffin.

Griffin, 28, is new to both the school and the job of vice-principal. He's previously worked as a teacher for the past seven years.

The new administrator grew up in Edmonton, where his years in Catholic school sparked an interest in theology that continued through his university years at the University of Alberta. He's currently pursuing a masters in education and leadership through the City University of Seattle and his coursework continues to include theology.

“I think my philosophy is definitely centred around our faith, the Catholic faith. So I really want to make Christ known to kids,” Griffin said.

Griffin most recently worked as a Grade 9 teacher in Red Deer at St. Francis of Assisi Middle School, and has also worked in Sylvan Lake and Lakeland. His wife also works as a teacher, and the couple recently had a baby boy.

He decided to pursue the administrative track because of his passion for Catholic education and a desire to work with teachers.

As part of his new role, he'll be mentoring the three new teachers starting at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys this year. Kristy Gulak is teaching Grade 3, while Danielle Fernetti and Jordan Hitz will both be teaching middle school math and science.

Griffin will also be taking the lead when it comes to professional development.

“We're really focusing this year on numeracy,” he said, noting the district has made previous big strides when it comes to literacy.

Another goal is to help get the school, where a renovation to modernize the facilities was recently completed, back to a good flow without the hassle of construction.

The rededication will be held later this month on Sept. 25.

Griffin's time in the classroom isn't done yet, either. He'll be teaching Grade 2 science as well as providing coverage in classes so teachers can meet to collaborate.

“I'm also leading a pretty cutting edge virtual reality option,” he said.

“I'd like the community to know that I'm really dedicated and excited, I really do love my job,” he said, noting he has a great team behind him both personally and professionally.

Principal Shane Chisholm looks to be a great mentor to learn from, he said. Griffin might be an educator, but he's not ready to call it quits when it comes to adding to his own knowledge and experience.

“I just plan to keep learning every day,” Griffin said.
