Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have reached a tentative agreement.

The draft agreements reached late Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 30) will apply to both bargaining units – urban, and rural and suburban mail carrier's (RSMC).

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon federal Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk noted the agreements were reached voluntarily.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers posted a media release that stated the agreement between the two sides was reached “in principle.”

“We can't give details of the agreements at this time, but we're pleased that our members don't have to resort to taking job action,” said Mike Palecek, national president of CUPW.

Barb Lilly, president of Local 818 in Red Deer, was pleased to hear the news.

“Everybody is breathing a sigh of relief now,” said Lilly. “We have faith in our negotiators and national executive board that they came up with the best deal possible.”

The agreements must be ratified by postal workers across the country before they become new contracts, she noted.

“Our next step after we get the terms and conditions will be to hold a ratification vote. Our old collective agreement will continue until the new one is signed,” said Lilly.
