A Carstairs man charged with the murder of a Calgary woman has been denied bail.

Earlier this month Calgary Police Service (CPS) charged Joseph D'Arcy Schluter, 45, of Carstairs, with first-degree murder in connection to the death of 51-year-old Cindy Enger, who was found dead in her Calgary home last January.

Schluter appeared in Calgary court on March 7. He was denied bail and his case was adjourned until April 1.

He was originally taken into custody on March 4 after Calgary police officers executed search warrants in Carstairs and Airdrie on March 5, including a home on Meadow Park Drive in Carstairs.

Police also executed search warrants at a business in Airdrie and an acreage just outside of Carstairs. A CPS spokesperson said all three locations are associated with the accused.

Police were asked to check on the welfare of Enger on Jan. 24, and found her dead in her home in Cranston, a neighbourhood in southeast Calgary.

Her death was deemed suspicious and further investigation by the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit determined the death was a homicide.

“Police do not believe Enger's death was random as the accused and Enger knew each other well,” police reported in a media release on March 7.

“However, motive and cause of death will not be released as both form part of the evidence that will be presented in court.”

Police are asking for anyone who had any contact with Enger in the months leading up to her death to call the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or the homicide unit tip line at 403-428-8877.

“Investigators would like to confirm the events leading up to her death, however are not seeking any other suspects.”
