INNISFAIL – There will be a new church for Innisfail’s Catholic community.

Our Lady of Peace Catholic Parish, which was built in 1962, was torn down on Friday (Sept. 27) several months after a small church fire occurred on the roof just after last Christmas. The demolition and its preparation took more than two hours during the morning of Sept. 27 and into the early afternoon.

“Our first plan was to change the roof design. We planned a different roof style and we planned to keep the foyer, the hall and a couple of walls,” said Father Liju Jose, parish priest. “Now it is more economical to rebuild the whole church.”

They are hoping to rebuild the new church within the same budget as the proposed roof, which was estimated to be about $600,000, noted Jose.

Mass will continue to be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School in Innisfail until the new church is built and completed early in the new year.

Demolition of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church is expected to be complete by the end of the day (Sept. 27).
