INNISFAIL – Your presence is requested at the Royal Wedding Tea, hosted by the Innisfail and District Historical Village on May 19.
The special event takes place in the Tea Room from 2 to 4 p.m. and will celebrate the marriage of Prince Henry of Wales and Meghan Markle.
“We encourage you to wear hats and gloves. Come out and have some fun and get in the spirit,” said Anna Lenters, president of the Innisfail and District Historical Society. “We are going to record the wedding and we’ll be playing it in the Tea Room, so if people opt not to get up that early, they can catch it at their leisure here.”
Citizens are asked to call ahead and reserve tickets. They can pay at the door.
In addition to the royal tact and decorum, there will be tea and sweet and savoury foods, including a special cake presentation, said Lenters.
She said it's the first time the historical village has held a tea to mark a royal wedding.
“This is something to be happy about and to celebrate,” said Lenters. “To acknowledge the people within this community that are of British descent and are part of the Commonwealth,” she added, noting many of the original settlers in the area are of Scottish, Irish and English descent.
Lenters said she is a strong supporter of the Royal Family and follows them with interest.
“As a couple I’ve been tracking their relationship as it has blossomed,” she said. “I think that this new generation of royals are far more open and approachable. That’s why the British people and supporters of the monarchy have had such a fondness for them.”
The event will also include a display of items in the village’s collection of previous royal events, including the Queen’s coronation, royal births and other royal weddings.
“People can come out and celebrate with their friends. (They can) celebrate that day, past weddings and events and share stories,” Lenters concluded.
Tickets are $12 and must be reserved in advance.
