PENHOLD - Winter isn't just about the cold and snow.

In the Town of Penhold it's also about celebrating the great outdoors, the community and family fun.

"People can get out and enjoy Penhold," said Dennis Cooper, Penhold mayor. "We're hoping the weatherman smiles upon us and we have some great weather so families can come out and enjoy the day."

This year, the event is being held on Feb. 20, Family Day, at the Lincoln Street Recreation Centre from 1 to 3 p.m.

"They have an outdoor skating rink there. Families can come out and skate and have fun," he said. "There'll be numerous other activities that they're planning that day."

Those activities include ring toss games, baseball games, sled races, a firepit for families to keep warm, and plenty of snacks to enjoy including hot chocolate, marshmallows and hotdogs.

"There'll be all sorts of things for families to do," said Cooper. "They can come out and enjoy the community. It's our way of saying thank you to Penhold for growing and making us the second-fastest growing community in Central Alberta."

Cooper said in previous years, there has been a good turnout of families and individuals with the town, including council members.

"I'm planning on being present and I'm sure other council members will be coming out (for Winterfest) also," said Cooper, noting the Penhold Fire Department and community peace officers' involvement in the event as well.

Winterfest is an annual event held every February for close to 20 years said Cooper.

"We've always tried to have it around the family holiday (Family Day) where Canadians get out and enjoy our Canadian winter, have some fun and enjoy the snow instead of shovelling it.

"We're going to be ready to have a great event," Cooper concluded.
