The Field of Honour at the Bowden Cemetery has now been adorned with a proper marker.
Last week members of the cemetery committee met at the grounds with local artist Brenda Beecroft to admire the finished project resulting from their hard work.
“We all have loved ones in our lives who have defended our country and this is what it's all about,” said Coun. Wayne Milaney, also a committee member.
Member Shirley Adams said it was about two years ago the then struggling committee was revived, and new priorities were set which included getting a proper marker for the almost full Field of Honour for veterans.
“We felt strongly about marking it because it's almost full.” She said a section in the south portion of the cemetery has been designated as a new area to continue the Field of Honour if necessary.
The sign was designed by Brenda Beecroft, who said she enjoys doing artwork but doesn't do it as a profession.
“It was a fun project,” she said, of thinking up the design which depicts a solider looking at a cross marking a grave. Hills are in the background as well as a tree. Red poppies are prominently displayed in the forefront. Beecroft designed a few different depictions for the committee to choose from.
“It was an honour to do something that will be there for centuries to come for veterans,” she said.
The design was crafted into a plaque at Olds Iron Works. The committee budgeted for $2,000 of the work and received $2,500 from town council.
