Police have made an arrest into the bombing murder of 23-year-old Vicky Shachtay, disabled single mother of one who died in her ground level apartment in Innisfail Nov. 25, 2011.
Brian Malley, 55 of Innisfail, has been charged with one count of first degree murder. Malley is also facing two additional charges: causing an explosion of an explosive substance likely to cause bodily harm, death or serious damage to property and sending or delivering to a person an explosive device.
The alleged remains in custody and will appear before Red Deer Court May 28 at 9:30 a.m.
"The death of a vulnerable young mother, like Victoria Shachtay, came as a shock to the citizens of this community who, like all Canadians, strive to protect those who are less able to protect themselves," said Supt. Curtis Zablocki, district officer-in-charge, Central Albert District of Alberta RCMP in a prepared statement Sunday.
Shachtay died in the morning of Nov. 25 after opening a package delivered outside her apartment triggered to explode.
Shachtay was confined to a wheelchair as a result of injuries sustained in a 2004 vehicle collision. At the time of the murder, she was living with her seven-year-old daughter, Destiny, and a live-in care giver.
On Friday May 25, and into the weekend, RCMP investigators executed a search warrant at the accused's residence located in town.
The six month investigation into Shachtay's death involved more than 70 investigators who worked thousands of hours to gather and examine evidence related to the murder, police said.
The investigation was led by the K Division Serious Crime Branch which is responsible for homicides investigations in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions. The investigation also involved support of the local RCMP detachment, and many other support units, including the RCMP’s Post-Blast National Response Team, Explosive Disposal and Technology Section, Tech Crimes, Special Tactical Operations, Criminal Analysis Section, Special "I" Surveillance Units, and Forensic Labs in Edmonton and Ottawa.
