INNISFAIL - Twenty-nine students rom across the Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD) are taking part in the new skilled trades dual credit course in mechanics, hydraulics and electrical, the division said.

The new program is offered at Olds College, where student learns online from college instructor and journey person Rob Schafer.

As with the dual credit courses, students involved in the course receive high school and college level credits at the same time.

Brianne Fletcher is a career coordinator with CESD.

“We are pleased to see the success of this program for students, as it builds upon their shop programming in their schools and the dual credit we already offer,” said Fletcher.

“We know that as students connect a passion with a career, their success increases not only with their career path decisions, but also with their current high school course work. The level of excitement for these opportunities for students is infectious.”

In the course, student learn about electrical circuits, magnetism, test equipment, battery fundamental and service, electronic control systems, and the fundamental of hydraulic systems and their components, she said.

Innisfail High School student Dane is taking part in the course.

“I have always wondered how he (his father) figures things out, and I am starting to see how fixing things on the farm will be useful. This course has been helpful. I’ve enjoyed learning about troubleshooting electrical issues,” he said.
