Penhold town council has put a hold on a proposed development in the southeast corner of town after the in camera portion of their regular meeting held on March 26.
Mayor Dennis Cooper said council decided to table the development from Clay Cup, which would have put in low-cost housing and apartments.
“We have to take a look at how their project mixes in,” Cooper said in an interview on April 26. He said there were concerns about whether the development was a suitable fit for Penhold.
“The product they were describing was a lot similar to a lot of what the builders were already building,” Cooper said, adding they want to see variety throughout the development projects in Penhold.
Cooper said an additional concern is whether or not the wetlands in the area can be properly developed.
A neighbouring development that is already underway will need to be completed so council can see how the proposed Clay Cup project would affect the area. The nearby development is mostly for single-family residential homes.
“Council had to feel comfortable,” Cooper said. The hold has no timeline on it, he added.
“When you get into spot development it may not fit with the community,” Cooper said.
