Community invited out for info night

Innisfailians looking for information on community organizations, recreation and sports groups and local support services are in luck this week.

Innisfailians looking for information on community organizations, recreation and sports groups and local support services are in luck this week.

The town’s annual fall/winter community information and registration night runs tonight and tomorrow from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Innisfail Twin Arena on the red ice surface.

Heather Fletcher, a community facilitator with the town, said local sports teams, volunteer organizations and service groups will be on hand to answer questions and provide information.

“Generally it’s anywhere from 30 to 40 (booths) and it grows every year, which is great,” said Fletcher.

Innisfail town council will also be hosting a free barbecue from 6 to 8 p.m. and another barbecue organized by the local Terry Fox Run committee is scheduled tomorrow night from 6 to 8. All proceeds from the second barbecue will go to the Terry Fox Foundation, though donations will also be accepted tonight.

The event’s target audience is parents looking for information, anyone interested in local volunteer opportunities, or those residents searching for general information, Fletcher said.

“I’m finding that it’s great for people who are new to the community too,” she said. “They come and then they can see what we offer.”

Among the groups expected to attend this year’s information night include Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Girl Guides, Innisfail Public Library, Innisfail Restorative/Youth Justice Society and AADAC. While the focus is on not-for-profit groups, Fletcher said they also approach groups who provide good service to the community to take part.

“Our target is anybody providing any kind of service or program in the community,” she said.
