INNISFAIL – The long-awaited modernization and expansion of town hall is getting underway this month following the recent contractor approval by council.

At council's regular meeting on Sept. 26, Phoenix Construction was awarded a $2,149.684 contract, plus a 10 per cent contingency of $215,000, for the construction and renovation project of the 35-year-old town administration building.

”They were the low tender and they got the job. It looks like they will be setting up this week or so and getting at it,” said Mayor Brian Spiller earlier this month.

In a report by administration, council members were told a tender call was made on Aug. 25 and a pre-bid meeting, which attracted 35 companies to review the building, was hosted at town hall on Aug. 31. The tender closed on Sept. 15 and nine bids were ultimately reviewed.

The modernization project will be conducted in two phases, with the first seeing construction of a new council chamber, offices and a public entry-reception area. The expected completion date of the first phase is next June. The second phase, which will see renovations done to the existing administration space, is expected to be completed by Dec. 31. 2017.
