Innisfail native Nicole Cossey broke a national swimming event record at the 2011 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships last week south of the border.
Cossey set the mark in the 100-yard freestyle at the St. Peters, MO event competing for Simon Fraser University.
The 55th Annual Men's and 31st Annual Women's NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships kicked off Wednesday, March 2 and ran through Saturday, March 5.
Cossey won her second race of the meet, setting a new NAIA record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.16, breaking SFU alum Vicky Sui's 2009 mark of 50.46.
Cossey and teammate Gia Bogetti then worked together with Meghan Quon and Kristine Lawson to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a record setting time of 3:27.85.
In her opening event, Cossey posted a time of 23.48 to win the 50-yard freestyle, edging Simon Fraser teammate Kristine Lawson at the line by .5 of a second.
Cossey and her teammates teamed up in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing fifth with a time of 1:46.46 in the finals. SFU's Meghan Quon finished in third place in the 500-yard freestyle final, posting a time of 4:59.24.
A total of 27 women's teams made the trek to St. Peters. In that group was 31 returning All-Americans.
