Innisfail competes in online video contest

Innisfail is one of 34 small towns competing in Big Valley Jamboree's Small Town Saturday Night competition.

The competition, sponsored in conjunction with Travel Alberta asks communities to upload a video to YouTube about their town and what is special about it. The winning town will have a mini Big Valley Jamboree hosted in its community with proceeds of the night going towards a local charity or non-profit organization. École Innisfail Middle School parent society is the submitting organization.

Doug Bos, of the Discovery Wildlife Park, helped film the video and presented it to council during the Feb. 26 meeting.

The video featured the middle school, ski hill, Discovery Wildlife Park, Daines Rodeo, the Asparagus Festival as well as other events and locals.

People can vote between March 6 and 20 online at bigvalleyjamboree.com/stsn. Voters can only vote once per day. The community that receives the highest number of eligible votes during the period will be named the winner.

Toilet rebate program starts

Council approved a rebate program that may help homeowners with old toilets from flushing money down the drain.

The rebate program offers $50 per toilet to people looking to replace their 13-litre toilets with the newer six-litre or dual flush toilets. Rebates are available to residential utility accounts of good standing with maximum of four toilets per household.

In a report presented to council, an estimated $180 a year can be saved on water and sewer utility bill.

The program is a one-year pilot program that was created after council identified it as a priority in its strategic action plan.

The reduced water amounts would ease the strain on municipal water systems, the report explained.

Shelley Gagnon, director of community services, said $5,000 has been budgeted for the year but will return to council to ask for more if the program takes off.
