Council's pitch for literacy

Town councilors have begun a special summer reading program at the Innisfail Library/Learning Centre to promote literacy.

Town councilors have begun a special summer reading program at the Innisfail Library/Learning Centre to promote literacy.

The program is called, ‘What is Your Councilor reading this summer?' and it offers the town councilors the opportunity to come and share what they have been reading in their free time.

From July 6 to 12, Coun. Danny Rieberger will be reading Zero Hour by Clive Cussler, and from July 13 to 19, Coun. Gavin Bates will be reading An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield.

“It doesn't matter if it is a book, magazine, or simply a label from the back side of your canned foods. Reading is important and we use the skill every day,” said Laurie Hodges-Humble, the library manager. “Literacy is essential. We read all the time. Reading should be a hobby we utilize.”

Rieberger said he enjoys light summer reads in the mainstream fiction category, adding he likes to use the eReader through the library to browse and read good books. He chose to sign up for this program to set a good example and because he simply loves to read.

“I would like to encourage others to pick up a book that they find interesting and read it,” said Rieberger.

Bates said he was participated in the program as a way to set an example for the younger generation. “If you can read, ultimately there is nothing you can't learn,” said Bates.

“Back in November I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Hadfield speak. I was very impressed with his speech, which motivated me to read his book,” said Bates.

Other town councillors have signed up for the reading program but their schedules and books have not yet been determined. Go to www.innisfail.ca under the library site for more information.
