Election delayed

The man charged in relation to a collision that left four Filipino workers dead and one injured had his court election put over until June 11.

Tyler James Stevens was not present in court when an agent for his lawyer appeared in Red Deer provincial court on May 14.

In court certain charges allow the accused to elect which court he is tried in – provincial court in front of a judge, the Court of Queen's Bench in front of a judge or in Queen's Bench with a judge and jury.

Stevens was charged after a devastating collision on March 4 on the QEII. It's alleged Stevens was the sole driver of a Range Rover that was driving northbound in the southbound lane of the highway, resulting in the collision with a southbound vehicle that had five passengers.

Stevens is facing a total of 20 charges, including multiple counts of impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death, driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit causing an accident causing death and more.

Bowden escapee pleads guilty

The man who escaped from Bowden Institution in late April pleaded guilty when he appeared in Red Deer provincial court on May 8.

Dean Leonard McClelland, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of being unlawfully at large and one count of escaping lawful custody.

McClelland is accused of escaping from the minimum security annex at Bowden Institution. McClelland escaped about 15 hours after being transferred from medium security to the minimum security section with no fences, said Cpl. Jeff Hildebrandt of the Innisfail RCMP.

“It was obvious in retrospect he had full intent and planning,” Hildebrandt said. He said McClelland had been in medium security for two years. McClelland had been serving a three-year, eight-month and 15-day sentence for criminal harassment, mischief in relation to property and arson that caused damage to property.

McClelland was caught in Calgary where he was arrested without incident. Hildebrandt said McClelland was considered a risk to previous victims and was arrested on property associated with them. The residents had been cleared from the property.

The judge put over McClelland's sentencing until June 13.

Lindsay's case appeared in Red Deer provincial court on May 8. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2013 in Red Deer.
