Two local youth are dead after a single-vehicle collision east of Red Deer on July 1.

Blackfalds RCMP and Red Deer County fire and EMS were called to the scene of the crash on Highway 595 near the intersection of Rge. Rd. 261 around 11:20 p.m. An 18-year-old male from Penhold and 16-year-old female from Springbrook were ejected from a Pontiac Grand Prix and passed away on scene.

Three other occupants survived the crash. Two of them were treated on scene and transported by ground ambulance to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre with serious injuries, according to police. The exact nature of those injuries was not released by police.

The fifth occupant was not ejected from the vehicle and was treated and taken to Red Deer hospital where they were released a short time later.

The survivors range in age from 17 to 18 years old.

Next of kin have been notified but no names are being released.

"There's no further updates. The investigation is still continuing as to the cause of the collision," Cpl. Greg Crane of the Blackfalds RCMP detachment said yesterday afternoon.
