Innisfail council gave first reading to Bylaw 1508 or the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal System bylaw that will soon include the service of curbside recycling pick-up.
The amendments to the bylaw include a $2 increase to the residential solid waste collection and disposal charges, which will take them up from $16 to $18 per month.
The additional fee will cover the cost of the recycling pick-up and blue recycling bins will be provided to residents by the town.
Council is currently looking for groups in town to help distribute the blue bins to the 2,700 households in Innisfail.
The curbside recycling will be picked up by Waste Management, the same company the town contracts for garbage collection, said Dietz.
When residents receive their blue bins there will be instructions inside as to what kinds of recyclables can be put in the blue bins and what can not.
"We will also be sending out information in residents utility bills and it will be put in the paper as an educational component to the program," said Dietz.
The program is also aiming to help reduce the cost of the current recycling system in Innisfail as the transfer station is currently operating at a deficit, said a report to council.
As of June 30, hours at the transfer station will be cut back to Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Changes to the transfer station fees will also be made under the amendments to the bylaw.
The town will continue to operate the hazardous waste roundup in April and October for residents to dispose of items such as paint, pesticides, herbicides, and batteries.
