DICKSON - The Dickson Store Museum held its Annual General Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation on Feb. 4.

The museum had 33 people in attendance. The evening began with a wonderful supper that was enjoyed by all, prepared and served by Kathleen Raines.

This year the theme for Volunteer Appreciation was "Volunteers Spread Sparkle." The tables were decorated with red tablecloths, white sparkly doilies with centrepieces of a candle holding a sparkler surrounded by sparkling confetti.

With this year being Canada's 150th birthday, the museum is celebrating its 30th year as a society and the Volunteer Appreciation there was a lot to celebrate that evening.

At each place setting there was a hand-held flag and a tattoo with the 150 year logo. Manager Sharon Lightbown talked about the importance of volunteering and how each volunteer does spread sparkle and by doing so enriches other lives.

Going with the theme she entertained with a story/poem she had written as a tribute to the volunteers. The sparkler was lit at each table. Each spark represented a volunteer and how the big spark sends out so many small sparks in all directions.

People remaining on the board include Doreen Nicholson, Antonia Nissen, Tracy Rowbotham, Bill Taylor, Marianne Nicholson and Harold Kemtrup. Lynne Morck agreed to stay on the board for another two-year term and Connie Swarbrick and Alice Savage agreed to be on the board for a two-year term. They were voted in by acclamation.

In 2016, the museum put up a new exhibit entitled Becoming a Museum Then and Now, featuring how we began to where we are now. On display are the original blueprints, old newsletters and many artifacts and documents of how we did things then. There are also photo albums covering the 30 years since we became a society. Come down and take a look; you could be in one of those pictures.

The museum is now the Visitor Information Tourist Center and carries brochures of attractions, campsites and guides throughout Alberta.

We even have a travel planner for you. All of this information is free for the taking, except the road maps, which cost $2.

The manager will be working throughout the winter on various projects. Thanks to Alberta Museums Association for funding the Operational Staffing Grant 2017.

This year the museum will reinstall last year's large exhibit and be putting up some smaller exhibits throughout the museum. If anyone has any ideas for an exhibit they would like to see please send it to [email protected].

The museum will be opening on the long weekend in May. Come out for a visit. For more information go to our website at www.dicksonstoremuseum.com.

Sharon Lightbown is the manager of the Dickson Store Museum.
