Drop-in centre a place of action in November

The Seniors Drop-in Centre is offering a full slate of programs and services over the next month, including a full discussion on wills, estates and memorials.

The Seniors Drop-in Centre is offering a full slate of programs and services over the next month, including a full discussion on wills, estates and memorials.

Not only is the drop-in centre a place for seniors to find a friendly face, a game of cards, or ‘lawn' games, but it is also a place to find information, to get advice, and also to learn.

“Since September 2013, we have been offering a series of Wellness Days for seniors. In September, we held a discussion on elder abuse, and in October, we presented practical advice on 72 -hour emergency and disaster preparedness along with a search and rescue session,” said FCSS' Tammy Oliver-McCurdie.

Attendance has been good, with 40-plus attending each presentation.

“This month on November 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m, we are hosting a discussion on three of the most important topics facing seniors today, wills, estates, and memorials,” assistant Colleen Preston added.

Carolyn Tulloch, of the Tulloch Law Office, will be discussing vital topics for seniors facing estate planning and will issues. Living wills, personal directives, power of attorney documents, estate transference and will executorship will be covered from a legal perspective.

“It is important that we have information on these topics available. Too many seniors and their families have not been fully prepared, and we want to help them in any way.”

Bruce McArthur, of Meaningful Memorials, will be discussing creative memorials and the full scope of options available now for funeral arrangements. Prepaid services, cremation versus full burial, church or non-church celebrations, pre-planned funerals, and many other options will be presented by McArthur.

“This month, the FCSS will be offering transportation from various seniors lodges to the drop-in centre for these discussions. Due to the nature of this presentation, we feel we need to extend our reach as much as we can. We will set up for 80-100 people, but look forward to serving as many as arrive,” Preston said.

Future planned sessions include nutritious eating in December and fraud protection in January.

Contact Oliver-McCurdie or Preston at 403-227-6601 to pre-register or to arrange for transportation to this important discussion. A short lunch will be served afterwards.
