Local seniors have an opportunity to learn about gluten free diets and celiac disease from registered dietician Taressa Waye of Alberta Health Services at the Innisfail Seniors Drop-In Centre on Nov. 12.

Waye will be speaking on nutrition issues, focusing on gluten and celiac related education for seniors.

According to celiac.ca, gluten sensitive patients may not have celiac disease but feel better when they eat a gluten free diet, while sufferers from the condition must be treated with a gluten free regimen.

“The discussion will start at 10 a.m. with coffee before the presentation,” said Jean Bennett, publicity director for the Innisfail Seniors Drop-In Centre. ”We are pleased to have Alberta Health Services come in to educate and clarify the information for our members and the community who attend.”

Symptoms of gluten sensitivity include abdominal pain similar to irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, headaches and tingling of the extremities. Celiac disease sufferers may be anemic, have chronic diarrhea, and experience weight loss, fatigue, cramps, bloating and irritability.

Previous health and wellness topics have included wills and powers of attorney, elder abuse, emergency preparedness, heart smart cooking, and fraud awareness.

Waye works with Alberta Health Services out of the Olds Campus Community Health Centre office. She is also the coordinator for the Good Food Club.

For more information on the nutrition discussion contact the drop-in centre at 403-227-6601 to pre-register or to arrange for transportation to the seminar.

The monthly birthday party will take place after the presentation and will include entertainment.
