A little over a year since his disappearance, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is calling the suspicious death of Dwayne Demkiw a homicide.

Demkiw's remains were found north of Innisfail on April 5 and an investigation by the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section has connected Jason Steadman, a 41-year-old American citizen to Demkiw's disappearance.

“We have classified his disappearance as a homicide,” said Anna Batchelor, spokesperson with the Edmonton Police Service.

On Oct. 15, 2015 a Canada-wide warrant was issued for Jason Steadman for first-degree murder and arson charges. He is currently in custody in the United States and is facing extradition to be prosecuted on a first-degree murder charge.

No further information is being released at this time noted Batchelor.

“At this point we are being very careful because the extradition process is still ongoing and we don't want to do anything to jeopardize that process,” said Batchelor, noting the process involves several partners at the municipal, provincial, national and international levels. “We just have to be really careful with what we're releasing at this time.”

Calls to the Demkiw family were not immediately returned.

Dwayne Demkiw's death is considered Edmonton's 19th homicide of 2015.
