INNISFAIL - Construction on the new million-dollar skatepark is well underway.

Since the July 15 groundbreaking ceremony crews from Innisfail's Howell's Excavating and Calgary-based New Line Skateparks have been at the site, located at the intersection of 42nd Street and 51st Avenue, clearing away the earth. The projected completion date target is for the end of September.

When completed the new facility will easily be comparable to any of New Line's other half dozen completed skatepark projects across the province, said Mac Whillans, New Line's site foreman, who is being joined by six other company representatives.

"This is a bowl that people from out of town will want to come to town for," said Whillans, adding the town's project will be comparable to one recently completed in Fort Saskatchewan. "This is a destination park."

The long-awaited recreational facility will include skatepark signage and donor wall, new landscaping features, as well as a spectator and user seating and socializing area.

In the meantime, Whillians and his colleagues are working closely with Howell's Excavating to ensure not only the highest quality of craftsmanship but a strong and reliable local building component.

"They (Howell's) have been really great to work with," said Whillans. "The shop is close by and they have been really accommodating."
