It was a great way to kick off the first weekend of spring.

Families, children and area residents gathered at the Penhold Regional Multiplex for the town's annual Easter event on March 19 from 1 to 3 p.m.

“It's been going on for quite a few years. It's something the town does annually here,” said Hayley Debeaudrap, community program coordinator with the Town of Penhold. “It's a family event for people to come out and enjoy, and it's just another chance for people to come out and use the multiplex and enjoy time with neighbours, friends and the community,” she added.

The event saw families and visitors from Penhold, Blackfalds, Innisfail and Red Deer, and included an Easter egg hunt with paper eggs placed around the multiplex, bouncy castles, face painting, activity tables where children coloured Easter designs, plenty of treats including chocolate Easter eggs, cotton candy, popcorn and a visit from the Easter Bunny himself. A few hours earlier there was an Easter egg hunt at Innisfail's Co-op store.

“We used laminated (paper) eggs. There's a different colour for each age group,” said Debeaudrap. “They had to find six eggs and then get a chance to enter and win an Easter basket.”

Debeaudrap noted the great turnout for the event on a Saturday afternoon.

“We think there's at least twice as many kids here as we had at Halloween and we had 105 kids at Halloween,” said Debeaudrap. “It's a great turnout.”
