INNISFAIL – Car care doesn’t have to be a man’s job.

Napa Autopro – Innisfail 2020 Auto Service Ltd. is helping ensure women have the knowledge they need to be proactive when it comes to car care and maintenance.

The local business is hosting a special car care clinic for women during the Weekend of Wheels on Sept. 8.

“Eighty per cent of our customers are women. They’re the ones coming in (with their car) and they’re the ones I’m explaining the issues to,” said John Schneider, owner of 2020 Auto.

“It’s in an effort to encourage women to take that information so they can feel confident going into a repair shop knowing they have a basic knowledge of what’s happening.”

He noted how times have changed over the years and how women are taking a more active role when it comes to things like car care. Schneider said it’s important for women to familiarize themselves with a car and how it operates, as well as terminology.

“This car clinic is an educational opportunity,” he said. “It’s more about educating them so they can do (something) themselves.

"It’s a basic understanding and an awareness of what’s going on,” he added.

Not only is Schneider investing his time and money in providing the workshop, he wants women to have the chance to learn from the best in the industry.

That’s why he’s bringing in car care expert Kelly Williams from Ontario.

Williams is a former professional race car driver with the CASCAR Super Series, the top stock car racing series, now named the NASCAR Pinty’s Series, and is a former judge on Canada’s Worst Driver.

She has been presenting car care clinics for 12 years.

“I usually come out every year to do car care clinics in Alberta,” said Williams. “I’m based out of Ontario but I’ve given over 600 clinics across the country.”

The two and a half hour clinic will cover a number of areas and a variety of car care topics, she noted.

“Women will check their oils, they’re going to learn how to check tire pressure, how the braking system works, wheel suspension and also learn (about) preventative maintenance.

“I started doing them because there’s a need for them,” explained Williams.

“I (hope) women feel more empowered when it comes to taking car of their vehicle.”

The free car care clinic has space for 50 women. Participants are asked to bring their own vehicle and must call Schneider to register prior to the event at 403-227–2020.
