RED DEER COUNTY – Environment and Climate Change Canada extended its extreme cold warning Monday to include most of Red Deer County and the urban centres near it.
Wind chill values of - 40 Celsius (C) to - 45 C are occurring, the federal agency’s 4:17 a.m. weather alert update said.
The warning now includes Red Deer County near Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Elnora, Lousana, Delburne, Pine Lake, Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park and Sylvan Lake.
A similar warning has been in place for Elnora, Lousana, Delburne and Pine Lake since Saturday.
“Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia,” the weather alert said.
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk, the federal agency said.
“Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” the alert said, adding “If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”
While Mountain View County and nearby urban centres are not included in the warning, parts of Kneehill County continue to be including Torrington.
