INNISFAIL/PENHOLD - The towns of Innisfail and Penhold held several indoor and outdoor activities for local families to celebrate Family Day.

"We're having a lovely weather day but unfortunately that caused the skating to be moved inside," said Innisfail mayor Brian Spiller, who was joined by several councillors and staff from the town. "I'd like to thank the Kinsmen club, they're out here cooking free hot dogs and serving pop, hot chocolate and coffee."

More than 200 families came out to enjoy the activities on the Feb. 20 holiday that was put on by the town and Innisfail Kinsmen Club. The day's activities included swimming, skating, free hot dogs, a fire pit and free hay rides.

"The fire department is out today and we've had some farmers and businesses donating the hay ride too," said Spiller. "It's a good reason for everyone to come out and see everybody."

Innisfail Kinsmen Club members were helping families celebrate the day.

"It's been a fabulous day today. The weather's been great, the sun is shining, we've had lots of people out today," said Tim Ainscough, president of the service club. "We've been raising a little bit of funds for cystic fibrosis as well."

Ashli Whyte was one parent out with her children to enjoy some skating.

"I love it. It gives me a chance to get out of the house with my girls and create some memories," said Whyte. "I really enjoy Family Day. You get the day off work and you can (spend) time with your family."

Dozens of families were also out in Penhold to celebrate Winterfest during the holiday.

"We have a number of people both young and old coming out to enjoy the day," said Mayor Dennis Cooper. "The kids are out cooking hot dogs and marshmallows and families are having a good time."

Cooper noted the history behind the day.

"In 1990 premier (Don) Getty proclaimed Family Day as the third Monday in February," he said. "I think one of the reasons we have Family Day is to get out of the winter blahs. It gives some time for families to get together and do some great things," Cooper added. "Neighbours visit with neighbours and people can meet new people in town.

"It's a wonderful event."
