A sense of relief is being felt by the family of Dwayne Demkiw, whose remains were discovered earlier this month in a remote bush 13 kilometres northeast of Innisfail.

“I felt a sense of relief as anybody would or any family member,” said Darren, a firefighter from CFB Wainwright, and who at the age of 39 is the younger brother of Dwayne. On April 15, Darren and family members went to the site where his brother's remains were found and erected a simple wooden cross and placed flowers. “Now that they have found him it is not complete closure but it is part of it.

“So far EPS (Edmonton Police Service) and the homicide division in particular have been very good and I could not be happier with the job they are doing,” he added.

RCMP from K Division headquarters in Edmonton, including forensic experts, were called to the scene on April 5 following a report that human remains were discovered in the bush just off a rural road. The remains were transferred to the Calgary Medical Examiner's Office and positively identified on April 15 as being those of 42-year-old Dwayne, a popular Edmonton man who has been missing since May 31, 2015.

The following morning, Dwayne's vehicle, a black, four-door, 2002 Acura 3.2 TL, was located on fire in southeast Calgary by the Calgary Police Service.

With the discovery of the Edmonton man's remains, the case has now been turned over by RCMP to the Edmonton Police Service, which has been officially investigating Demkiw's disappearance since last July.
