No injuries were sustained in a fire that broke out in a Penhold home's kitchen last Wednesday morning causing less than an estimated $10,000 in damage.

Penhold Fire Department crews responded to a report of a structure fire on Larne Place around 8:49 a.m. Sept. 21.

Smoke was showing when crews arrived at the single-storey home.

A working smoke alarm alerted the occupants of the home, including children, who called 911, exited the home and were waiting outside when fire crews arrived, said Penhold fire Chief Jim Pendergast.

The fire was contained to the kitchen.

“The origin was a pot on the stove with cooking oil,” he said.

There was smoke in the house and crews said they found high readings of carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide.

Six units and 19 firefighters responded.

Fire crews remained on scene for more than two hours making sure the atmosphere was clear and conducting the investigation.

The investigation revealed an unattended pot on the stove was the cause of the fire.

Pendergast went on to say the occupants did exactly the right thing by calling 911 and exiting the house to wait for the fire department.
