INNISFAIL – An early morning fire east of town has “seriously” damaged a parts building at a heavy-duty mechanic shop.

Innisfail fire Chief Gary Leith said a call came in at about 8 a.m. today – Wednesday, June 19 – that a fire broke out in a commercial building along Rge Rd. 282 in Red Deer County, about two kilometres east of Innisfail.

Leith said that when firefighters arrived at the scene, the parts building at a heavy-duty mechanic shop, which he estimated to be about 30 ft. by 20 ft. in size, was heavily involved with flames.

“The main single-storey parts building was fully involved in the fire, and was threatening shop areas. A number of traffic units had to be moved out to prevent further damage or spread of fire,” said Leith.

He said help was requested from both Red Deer County and Penhold fire departments.

Leith said a total of 18 firefighters were ultimately sent to the scene, and added that while they had the fire under control by around 10 a.m., some members remained on the scene until roughly 1 p.m.

While no injuries from the fire were reported, Leith said the parts building was “severely damaged.”

He said shops on both sides of the building, including a 10-bay garage, were saved.

Leith said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
