INNISFAIL — More than 40 drivers have recently been caught on camera illegally driving past stopped school buses with their flashing lights activated in the Chinook’s Edge School Division's (CESD) geographical area, say officials.

By not stopping for the flashing lights, the motorists are putting students at grave danger and risk, says superintendent Kurt Sacher.

“We are very concerned,” said Sacher. “We are seeing a significant number of violations in different areas (of the division). It’s been a very big concern, especially for our bus drivers. That really scares them and they are very concerned.”

Asked if the division has seen anyone hurt by the offending drivers, he said, “No, not yet. With all due respect, stop before someone does get hurt.

“People need to be more aware that when the buses stop and that stop-sign arm is out, it is just like a stop sign at an intersection.”

Over the past quarter, 43 violating drivers were caught on newly installed cameras on the division’s school buses, trustees heard at the Dec. 15 board meeting.

CESD officials have been in contact with RCMP in the district and have been providing videos to investigators, he said.

Failing to stop for a school bus with alternating flashing red lights activated comes with a $543 fine and six demerit points.

As well, it is unlawful to pass a stopped school bus as long as its red lights are activated.
