Former Innisfail mayor and councillor Doug Fee is now running for Senate.
Fee was a councillor from 1971 until 1977 when he was elected mayor and served for 11 years.
He moved to Innisfail in 1967 with his wife and two children and was a teacher in town before beginning work at Manville Canada Inc. in 1977.
"Serving on council is one of the reasons why I'm qualified to run," said Fee over the phone from his home in Calgary. "We learned to push ideas and work as a successful council. It's given me experience to work off of."
Currently the CEO of the Canadian Angus Association based in Calgary, Fee is one of seven PC members running.
"As long as we have it (Senate) we should have people in it to run effectively Ö there should be a broad range of experience and I think I can be an effective voice."
Fee was also an MP for Red Deer between 1988 and 1993.
On Feb. 10 and 11 PC AA members will vote on a selection ballot. The top finishers in this process will represent PC Alberta in the province's senator selection election, which is to run concurrently with the province's next general election, expected sometime this spring.
Alberta is currently the only province in the country to select nominees through voting. The province will elect three senate nominees.
Other candidates from the PC party include Doug Black, Greg Krischke, Jack Redekop, Mike Shaikh, Sam Shaw and Scott Tannas.
