Big Brothers Big Sisters of Innisfail, now renamed Big Brothers, Big Sisters Prairie to Peaks, is holding its first annual “Junk In Your Trunk” fundraiser sale.
The event takes place on June 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lot next to the I.D.A. pharmacy in the Henday Mall. People who may be doing some spring cleaning and have items they wish to sell from their vehicle are welcome to come out, sell their garage sale-like items and support a local non-profit organization.
Setup for participants begin at 8:15 a.m.
“We rely a lot on fundraising for our programs, so we're doing events like this to help support (Big Brothers, Big Sisters Prairie to Peaks),” said Sherry Dijkstra, vice-chair of the board for the youth agency. “People can bring their cars, trucks or vans full of items to sell.”
The non-profit organization has an office in Innisfail and now serves the communities of Olds, Sundre, Spruce View, Bowden and Innisfail.
The idea for the fundraiser came from a colleague who used to live in London, England, where they had similar fundraising events called “boot sales.”
“We couldn't call it a boot sale in Canada because everyone would think we were selling boots, so we called it ‘Junk In Your Trunk' and we're trying it for the first time,” said Dijkstra. “It's a day to pull up with your car filled with garage sale items and sell them out of your car.”
In addition to the fundraiser sale, the agency will also have its annual Rodeo Barbecue in the Legion Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Money raised from both the registration fees and the barbecue will go to the non-profit organization, while participants keep all money they make selling their items.
To participate in the Junk In Your Trunk fundraiser, residents are asked to register either prior to the event (by June 16) for a $10 fee, or on the day of (June 18) for a $20 fee.
