Innisfail's food bank is counting its blessings.

With an increase in food donations of nearly 3,000 pounds over last year's 10,000-pound total, and cash donations remaining close to the same, the charity is prepared for the future.

The list of donor organizations includes St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School, École John Wilson Elementary School, Stuff-a-Truck, the Lions Club, the Gwendale Elks Club, the Kinsmen Club, Equus, Pathfinders, the Rotary Club of Innisfail, the Innisfail Legion and the Innisfail Eagles, among many others.

“We live in a generous community,” said Carol Sim, an executive member with the Innisfail and Area Food Bank. “There have been many large donations such as $5,000 from Red Deer Mitsubishi this summer, $2,500 from CP and more than $9,782 from Johns Manville, all of which make a difference to our clients.”

Sim added the food bank is not the only charity to benefit from Innisfailians.

“Even the Christmas bureau has had a good year,” said Sim. “The Charity Check Stop was good for both groups and with all the volunteers from emergency services, church groups and restorative justice, everyone won.”

While the shelves are full for the moment, Sim added the demand is high this year for food resources.

“We will be fine until about March,” said Sim, who is still waiting for donations from other companies. “Before then, we will start food drives up again and there is always our regular donators who keep our shelves filled.”

Those interested in applying to the food bank for assistance must bring documentation for health-care numbers, proof of residence and income, or pensions/AISH on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Individuals interested in donating food or funds can call 403-227-0600 for more information.
