INNISFAIL – Glen Carritt no longer has to deal with criminal charges hanging over his head.
Eleven months ago on Feb. 3, Carritt, a former town councillor and defeated Innisfail mayoral candidate, was charged with assault and mischief following an altercation in Sylvan Lake while participating in a 2022 Freedom Convoy rally.
He was scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Jan. 10 for trial.
However, the Crown withdrew the charges at the start of the hearing.
When contacted on Jan. 11 for comment, Carritt directed the Albertan to media coverage from outside the immediate Innisfail region.
He has not immediately responded to a request by the Albertan to provide a statement to Innisfail and area readers. The Albertan declined to use other media coverage of his case for its article.
Last October, Carritt also had a public health violation charge against him tossed.
He had been served with a COVID-related violation ticket for hosting an outdoor Easter party on April 3, 2021; a time of strict provincial COVID-19 restrictions.
The ticket violation against Carritt, a former leader of the new Alberta Statehood Party that aims to become the 51st state of the United States of America, was handled by the Crown and the Provincial Court of Alberta through a stay of proceedings; a process defined as a suspension of court action without resolution of guilt or innocence.
