Grade 8 students at Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School put their heads together and organized a games night Dec. 5 to raise funds for the Red Deer SPCA.
Whitney Oakley, social enrichment teacher at the school, said two of the Grade 8 classes set about raising the money after groups chose topics to make videos about. The social studies teachers at the school picked the video done about animal abuse, which gave them their topic.
“They had to choose an organization,” she said. So they picked the SPCA.
Jaydon Vandeven is one of the students who helped take the lead on organizing the games night. He said it featured gaming consoles, a dance room, board games and more for a $5 donation.
“I did a lot of the advertising,” he said.
The experience of organizing an event was “a little bit different.
“It's the biggest project I've ever done,” he said.
They raised $172 and a can of beans for their efforts, he said. The can of beans was dropped off by someone who then left.
“It feels good to help,” he said. “I'm hoping we could do it again and raise more.”
Oakley said three of the other Grade 8 classes did a food bank fundraiser and were able to gather 315 items for their efforts.
“It's nice to see them involved,” she said.
