A graffiti removal initiative is one step further in development after council passed a graffiti kit distribution policy last week.
During council April 10, Rob Anderson, peace officer, presented one of the 50 kits ready to be lent out to the public.
Each kit contains gloves, graffiti removal spray, a paintbrush and some rags. The total cost of the 50 kits is $1,500.
“It's a guide to start with and see how popular they are,” said Anderson.
Launched three years ago, the program brings in men from the Remand Centre approximately twice a week to clean up graffiti in town.
This year, the program received $5,000 in grant money from the town meant to go towards graffiti kits as well as education and promotion of the kits.
A business owner or resident can borrow a kit from the town to remove graffiti in their area. They must provide their name and address, how long they need it and where and what type of property the graffiti is on as well as a photo.
The removal program is one of council's strategic priorities. Coun. Jason Heistad had been pushing for the kits as a way to get the community involved in helping to beautify the town and keep the graffiti away.
Currently a $500 fine is levied on someone caught spraying or painting graffiti with the fine increasing to $1,000 for the second offence and $2,500 for the third.
Anyone interested in a kit can contact the town office at 403-227-3376.
