Although the doors opened to the public in January, last week an official celebration was held for the grand opening of the Innisfail Library / Learning Centre.
“This is much more than a library,” said MP Earl Dreeshen, who spoke during the presentations held at 4 p.m. inside the building June 28. “Hopefully it will grow as it should.”
MLAs Kerry Towle and Mary Anne Jablonski also spoke during the presentation as did Mayor Jim Romane and Parkland Regional Library director, Ron Sheppard.
“For a long time the library learning centre was merely a twinkle in the town's eye,” said Romane.
“We had reached a point where we had outgrown the library though it served the community well for a number of years.”
He said the build wouldn't have been possible without the financial contribution of $4.786 million from the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund, various financial donors and the many volunteers and agencies that he called “the backbone of all this.”
Besides the library, the building also features several meeting rooms and is the home of the Henday Association for Lifelong Learning. The green-roof is an environmental bonus providing added insulation for more energy efficient climate control, said Romane.
The hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3p.m.
