A security guard who helped rescue a woman allegedly abducted by an Innisfail man in March is getting rewarded for his work.
Khalid Shahid was on duty March 28 at CrossIron Mills mall in Balzac when he received a note from a Good Samaritan written by the abducted woman explaining she had been abducted and assaulted.
Shahid contacted the RCMP, located the victim and suspect and brought them to the security office of the mall.
Yesterday Insp. Tony Hamori, the officer in charge of the Airdrie RCMP Detachment presented Shahid with a ‘detachment commander's certificate of appreciation' for his role in rescuing the woman. Police said “his quick thinking and actions were instrumental in assuring the safety of the victim, as well as assisting the officers with the arrest of the suspect.”
The Good Samaritan lives out of town and was not present for the ceremony.
“This incident is an excellent example of community/police cooperation which had a very positive outcome,” said Insp. Hamori in a prepared statement.
On March 28, after Shahid had secured the suspect's location, two plainclothes RCMP officers responded to the security office. When one of the officers started to speak with the victim, the suspect became angry and assaulted the victim in front of the police, a report reads. When the police went to arrest the suspect he fought with police before being handcuffed.
The victim and the male had been involved in a domestic relationship but were recently separated because of previous abusive behaviour. The victim had reported an incident on March 15, and the accused was arrested and placed on strict conditions. The accused allegedly violated the conditions and went to the woman's home. He abducted and assaulted her and threatened the life of her dog, police said.
The name of the male cannot be released to protect the identity of the victim.
