A rural Bowden man is facing numerous firearms charges after a several hour stand-off with police last week.
Innisfail RCMP and the Red Deer Emergency Response Team responded to a firearms complaint at a rural residence near Bowden Wednesday night.
RCMP were dispatched to the residence located just north of Highway 587 near Range Road 21 at 6:30 p.m. where there was a report of a firearm being discharged in the residence.
The residence is home to one adult male who was alleged to have discharged the firearm while another family member was present in the home. That family member then left the premises.
The male occupant is know to have been diagnosed with a mental illness and was not believed to be using his medication, according to Innisfail RCMP reports.
The Emergency Response Team and RCMP negotiators sent to the scene, as it was known there were other firearms in the residence.
The negotiators tried to communicate with the male suspect in the residence but were unable to contact him.
Residents in the nearby area were evacuated for their safety and Highway 587 was closed for five kilometers around the residence.
Around 10:30 p.m. the male suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody by the Emergency Response Team members.
The man is now being charged with several firearms offenses and several offenses under the criminal code, said Const. Jonathan Thomas, Innisfail RCMP.
Search of the residence found seven long guns, and several hundred rounds of ammunition associated to them. Three of the firearms found in the residence were found loaded including the suspect firearm, a 303 British rifle with a live round in the chamber.
A number of other oversized illegal ammunition clips were discovered, fully loaded, including a drum style magazine with 75 rounds and two clips with 32 rounds each, according to the press release.
None of the firearms were registered and the male suspect does not have a license to be in possession of the firearms.
