Holiday season kicks off Friday

The multiplex will be bursting with festive activity this Friday in celebration of the third annual Penhold Community Christmas.

“We are going to kick it off with a big lighting of the tree event,” said Julie Dallaire, community services manager. That starts at 6 p.m. and the tree, located near the main entrance of the multiplex will be lit while a singing presentation welcomes Santa to the building.

Dallaire said this is her first year being part of the event so she isn't sure how many people to expect. She said she was involved with the town's recent Halloween festivities that drew 248 people.

“We thought that was just fantastic and are hoping for that amount again,” she said.

This year there will be a free family skate from 5:30 to 6:30, Christmas crafts, pictures with Santa, cookie decorating and snacks and refreshments. The night will end at 8 p.m.

“Weather permitting we will have sleigh rides set up outdoors,” said Dallaire.

The evening is free, and is meant to allow everyone in the community to participate in the various activities.

There are two activities that do cost money and that includes the “little shoppers” programs that gives children an opportunity to purchase items costing between $2 and $10 for their family. As well, there is a silent auction held in the library.

“This is our major fundraiser for the library to help with programs,” said Dallaire of the silent auction.

Library employee Cindy Last said the auction is already set up at the library and items include tools, bath and spa packages, home-sewn items such as tablecloths and napkins, and books.

The auction runs until the Community Christmas starts at which point the winners will be announced.

“We don't have a goal, we are just grateful to get what we can,” said Last, who said the community is typically very supportive of the auction.

The money will go towards funding library programs such as a summer fun reading program, an adult book club and tutoring sessions on Wednesday evenings for schoolchildren.

The library will be hosting pictures with Santa and while families wait for their photos, there will be crafts set up at tables for children to work on.
