INNISFAIL – STARS air ambulance was called out this morning (June 22) to transport a woman to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital following a rural single-vehicle rollover.
Gary Leith, chief of the Innisfail Fire Department, said his office received a call at about 9:30 a.m. on June 22 to attend a single-vehicle accident on Rge. Rd. 270, located about 10 kilometres northeast of town.
He said a total of nine firefighters, including himself, attended the scene with an engine as well as command and rescue units.
They were assisted by officers from Red Deer County Patrol, Innisfail and Red Deer RCMP, a RCMP traffic unit as well as a police dog and handler from the City of Red Deer.
“County patrol was able to put up a drone to do an area search because we weren't sure whether she was on her own initially and the dog unit from Red Deer assisted with that as well,” said Leith.
When the woman was discovered, it was determined she had been ejected from the vehicle with a head injury, said Leith.
“With her injuries, we assisted EMS in stabilizing and getting her into the ambulance at the STARS landing site,” he said, noting his firefighters remained at the scene until 11:30 a.m.
Leith said the woman was in serious condition and was flown by STARS to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital.
“All services worked well together as always to resolve a stressful incident,” said Leith.
He said he did not know the cause of the crash, which left the vehicle flipped over in a ditch.
“It lost control and rolled,” said Leith.
Leith said the RCMP continues to investigate the crash to determine its cause.
