INNISFAIL — The Innisfail Church of the Nazarene is inviting the community to help collect and donate school supplies for needy Innisfail kids during the remainder of this summer.
“With a challenging economy and inflated cost of living, the goal is to help take some of the pressure off local families when kids return to school this fall,” a news release says.
Until Aug. 30, drop boxes will be located at Dark Woods Brewing, the Innisfail Public Library, Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion No. 104, No Frills and the Co-op (grocery location only).
More businesses are invited participate.
“Local community-minded businesses can participate in the school drive by serving as a drop-off location for community members to donate school supplies,” the release says. “Participating locations will be given an identifiable donation box.”
All school supply donations collected will be distributed to families in need by the school drive partner, École John Wilson Elementary School.
École John Wilson Elementary School has asked for pencils, white erasers, packs of 24 Crayola wax crayons, packs of 24 Crayola pencil crayons, pencil sharpeners with containers, headphones (no earbuds), glue sticks, Crayola “Twistables” or “PipSqueaks,” zippered pencil cases and kids’ lunch kits.
On July 26, Town of Innisfail Mayor Jean Barclay made the first school supply donation to encourage participation in the drive.
On Aug. 17, the Innisfail Church of the Nazarene will be hosting a community block party from 12 noon to 2 p.m. in the parking lot. That event will also serve as a great opportunity for people to drop off school supplies.
All Innisfailians are welcome to participate.
The block party will feature a free barbecue as well as fun activities for kids and door prizes.
Businesses are also invited to provide a door prize to be included in the draws held during the community barbecue.
Businesses that have any questions about this project and/or they can participate -- either as a drop-off location or by providing a door prize -- can reach out to Pete at 403-358-2207.
