INNISFAIL – Growing season is finally here.

Local gardeners and members of the Innisfail and District Garden Club have been busy preparing the Innisfail Community Garden.

“Usually the Monday after Mother’s Day we begin to plant and last fall people prepared the garden as well,” said Marion Davidson, community garden committee member.  “We’ve been gearing up for a couple of weeks already.”

The club will unveil a new sign and hold a shed dedication ceremony at the Innisfail Community Garden this Friday, May 11 at 1 p.m.

“We’re hoping to dedicate our new shed to the community and have all the people involved in building it and funding it there,” said Davidson, noting partners Innisfail Co-op and Innisfail FCSS (Family and Community Support Services), as well as local organizations, the town, businesses and members of the community.

The new shed was something the community garden needed, noted Davidson.

“We’ve had one meeting already to talk about our season so we know what we’re gearing up for,” she said. “We’re going to be planting some honeyberries this year. The town has already helped us prepare the land,” she added, noting the berries, located west of the garden, will be free for the public to pick.

“They are the earliest berry of the season and they are very similar to blueberries,” she said.

In addition, there is a small garden bed that grows asparagus, rhubarb and blueberries that are also free for public picking this season.

The Town of Innisfail has provided the community garden with two large water tanks and garden committee members will collect rainwater from the shed in four barrels, also provided by the town.

The community garden is located at the corner of 59th Street and 49th Avenue.
